Celebrate Life Below Water. Eat Blue

Engineers Teach AI to Navigate Ocean with Minimal Energy

Engineers at Caltech, ETH Zurich, and Harvard are developing artificial intelligence that will allow autonomous drones to use ocean currents to navigate the oceans.

The goal of these artificial intelligence monitoring systems would be to create an autonomous system to monitor the conditions of the oceans using algorithms inspired by real swimming animals. These robots could even explore oceans on other worlds like Enceladus or Europa.

Peter Gunnarson, a graduate student at Caltech says “Not only will the robot be learning, but we’ll be learning about ocean currents and how to navigate through them.”
